THEhesperidin is a bioflavonoid, a type of plant pigment with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, found mainly in citrus fruits.
Oranges, grapefruits, lemons and mandarins all contain hesperidin; it is also available as a supplement.
Health benefits
Hesperidin is assumed to have a wide range of health benefits, ranging from cancer treatment to relief from hot flashes; not all of these benefits are supported by scientific sources.
Among the major benefits we have:
- effects on blood vessels: hesperidin is a natural remedy for allergies, hypertension, hot flashes, hay fever, sinusitis, menopause, premenstrual syndrome and varicose veins;

Hesperidin side effects
Hesperidin is generally well tolerated, but can trigger a number of side effects, including:
- abdominal pain

- contact dermatitis
- nausea
Supplements of this bioflavonoid may not be safe for people taking certain medications (anticoagulants, blood pressure medications, calcium channel blockers), therefore it is very important always consult your doctor before taking them.
Hesperidin can affect blood clotting and increase the risk of bleeding; people taking anticoagulants and suffering from bleeding disorders should not take this substance.
dosage
There is no recommended daily dose; different dosages have been used in the various clinical studies carried out: for example, to study its role in improving the circulation of the legs, a supplement based on 150 mg of hesperidin medil-chalcone was used.
In general, dosages of 50 to 150 mg per day are well tolerated, although some studies have managed to administer 600 mg / day for periods of 4/12 weeks.
Sources of hesperidin
You can increase your intake consuming more lemons, limes, oranges, tangerines and grapefruits; another source is peppermint, both in fresh and dried form.
