Rules of the CrossFit ® Games 2023 in detail
CrossFit® Open 2023
- The inscriptions ai CrossFit® Open 2023 they have already started, precisely on November 17, 2022.
- Athletes must provide information to establish their competitive region for the Open, which will be allocated for the remainder of the season.
- Athletes from the United States and Canada will be allocated one of two semi-finals in North America based on residency – either where their box is located or, for unaffiliated members, their home address.
- North American athletes living outside of North America will be assigned to the North America East region.
- Athletes need not reside in the country of which they are claiming citizenship, provided they are citizens of that country.
- Athletes with double or more citizenships can choose which country to represent.
- If an athlete resides outside their country of citizenship and believes they can advance to the semi-final stage themselves, they can apply for an exemption to be placed in a different competition region.
If such an exemption is granted, the athlete's competition region and ranking country flag will be changed for the duration of the season according to the country in which they are entered.
This could mean that Roman Khrennikov, a Russian athlete who has struggled several times to participate in the Games, but who finally obtained a visa last year, could compete in the United States under the stars and stripes flag.
- Waivers must be submitted to the CrossFit® Games team by February 1st.
Registration for teams
- In previous years, athletes had to live within 100 miles of their box in order to compete on a team from that affiliated gym. This aspect has been removed.
- Only athletes who train at an authorized affiliate are eligible to compete on a team from that box.
- Athletes must be registered and placed on the team roster before the close of the first Open event.
- Each Open Event must be held in the same physical location as the team affiliate.
- Squad members cannot switch between squads, even if they belong to the same affiliated box.

The doping test schedule for the 2023 season has also been revealed!
CrossFit® Semifinals 2023
- CrossFit® Inc. will fully operate the semifinals in North America (East and West) and Europe. The remaining 4 semi-finals will be run by authorized and licensed CrossFit® entities.
- Athletes who qualify for a semi-final as individuals and as a team they have to choose, before the semi-final, which division to participate in.
For example, an athlete who has registered to be eligible to compete in a team box and qualifies for both teams and as an individual, must choose which course to continue to the semi-final.
- A particular athlete cannot compete at both team and individual level in a semi-final.
- However, if the athlete chooses to compete as an individual in the semifinals rather than on the team they are enrolled in, they can still compete on the team if they qualify for the CrossFit® Games.
A hypothetical example can be given from last year's CrossFit® season. Katrin Davidsdottir was signed up to Annie Thorisdottir's team for the 2022 CrossFit® season. Davidsdottir competed as an individual in the semifinal, while Thorisdottir competed in a team with Tola Morakinyo, Khan Porter, and Lauren Fisher.
If Fisher is pulled from the team due to injury just days before the CrossFit® Games, Katrin Davidsdottir could replace her as a member of the team, even if she did not compete with the team during the semifinals.
- Athletes who qualify for a semi-final in both individual and age group divisions may compete in both divisions.
- Athletes who qualify for a semi-final in the age group division and team division are eligible to compete in both divisions.
Progress from the semifinals at the 2023 CrossFit ® Games
As mentioned above, CrossFit® will use a world ranking system to assess how many qualifying places each region will receive.
Each region will have a minimum, but eligible athletes may differ from the men's and women's divisions, even if they are from the same region.
CrossFit® has not yet explained how this world ranking system will work, but it seems problematic because it will take into account an athlete's last two years of placement at the Open, quarterfinals, semifinals, and CrossFit® Games.
In the event that an athlete declines an invitation to the Games, CrossFit® will assign a seat to the next eligible athlete in the respective semi-final competition.
“In the event of a substitution or a violation of CrossFit® drug policy, no more than three athletes outside the qualifying position may be eligible for a substitution position.”
