Catalina Chelmus: from small gymnast to CrossFit® Games athlete

"For those who believe in dreams, a step is enough to reach the stars"

We open with an aphorism by Antonio Aschiarolo to tell the story engaging story, culminating in the crowning of a dream, of the resilient Catalina Chelmus, leading athlete of the Castelli Romani, one "Daydreamer" whose sports career began as a little girl in Artistic Gymnastics, until she landed today at the CrossFit ® Games through a difficult and far from obvious path.

The word CrossFit® now echoes in all gyms, being the fitness trend of the moment, but for those who haven't heard of it before, it's a tough one physical preparation discipline composed by force and metabolic conditioning, consisting in performing movements drawn from various sports (running, weight lifting, climbing, gymnastics, ...), in order to obtain an optimal general state of form.

The competitive aspect that allows practitioners from all over the world to compare their fitness level through events organized throughout the year is incisive, but the culmination of the season takes place with an online selection, better known as CrossFit® Open, who, through appointments a weekly frequency for the duration of five weeks, allows you to go to compose the elite of world fitness that will give life to the most important competition known as CrossFit® Games, an event that draws the attention of all the media in the sector.

Catalina's story

Originating from Romania, but in Italy from an early age, Oana Catalina Chelmus, born in '87, residing in the charming town of Genzano di Roma, located in the heart of the Alban Hills of the province of Rome, is an athlete who from a very young age showed considerable motor-coordination skills, investing the years of her youth in the Artistic Gymnastics, thus developing neuromuscular qualities that would have allowed her to learn any sport with simplicity.

"Daughter of art"Catalina lives sport daily as a teenager, starting to teach gymnastics while pursuing her career as an athlete, dividing times and spaces to devote to her training with that of her students, carrying out both activities with passion and dedication.

A sporting career of announced successes, but is facing the cameras of the documentary film "18 Ius Soli" di Fred Kudjo Kuwornu (winner of the Gianandrea Mutti Prize) who, reporting his direct testimony as a second generation Italian, confesses his disappointment: a permanent residence card allows her to live in our country, but at the same time precludes her dream of being part of the national team; not being an Italian citizen, she would have been denied access to the team, even if she had passed the selections she had been invited to take part in.

A very hard reality, it would have been for anyone, but the ambition to reach a high competitive level in sport places logistical problems in the background. It resists. He insists. She understands that she is strong, because being strong is her only choice, her ambitions allow her to be able to cope even with the thought of giving up.

Catalina and CrossFit®

Once imported to our beautiful country, with CrossFit®  love blossoms at first sight, starting to train during the "pioneering" years and soon becoming a "known face", reaching the podium of competitions throughout the Italian territory.

Determination and ambition not long in making his name known also in international panorama, earning the respect of both opposing athletes and enthusiasts among the public of the various events in which it participates, including the Fitness Festival at Wodapalooza in Miami, according to the importance of the CrossFit ® Games areas.

And the latter is the competition that Catalina has always had primary objective, built step by step, race after race, event after event, without burning the stages, respecting the times of physiological adaptation of your body to the new levels of competitiveness, respecting a healthy lifestyle, balanced nutrition and progressive training, wisely avoiding the inviting dark side of the shortcuts, deserving every conquest with his own strength.

His way to the CrossFit® Games

The daydream is finally crowned for the first time in 2019, afterwards having won the CrossFit® Games Open for his hometown of Romania, of which she proudly waved the flag, but at the same time representing the dream of all the Italian girls who today flock to their neighborhood box, having been the first athlete trained entirely in Italy to have taken part in an event of that magnitude.

We look forward to seeing Catalina again on those stages it deserves, giving us once again the thrill of seeing and cheering her on the international CrossFit® Games screen.
