I do CrossFit but I have an allergy: how can I do it?

boy blows his nose

Face a session of CrossFit during allergy season it can turn into a nightmare for the sufferer. Puffy eyes, stuffy nose and a string of endless sneezing risk making workouts impossible, not to mention thattaking antihistamines involves - in most cases - the appearance of numerous side effects that slow down the process recovery post workout.

I medications against allergies in fact they mainly aim to counteract histamine, the organic molecule responsible for allergic reactions. At the same time, however, they cause those who take them drowsiness and feeling of exhaustion, to the point that in some cases they come prescribed as an alternative cure for anxiety.

It is quite common to feel tired and sleepy when taking antihistamines.

How then to manage CrossFit workouts when the air is full of pollen and does not let us breathe? There are some measures to prevent allergic reactions, especially during a session in the box.

Choose the right time to work out

Pollen allergy strikes with the arrival of spring. The possibility of predicting the onset of symptoms can play in our favor. It allows us, for example, to provide us with suitable medicines in advance, so as not to be caught unprepared during training. But it also allows us to organize ourselves better and to conduct our CrossFit sessions at times when the risk of being attacked by allergens is less high.

In fact, certain types of pollen tend to be more widespread in the area during the peak works: in that case it is advisable to train during the evening or early in the morning. At the same time, it would be better to avoid CrossFit sessions during days with a dry climate or very windy. Under those conditions, pollen spreads through the air much more quickly.

Run for cover: train indoors!

Although in general CrossFit is a discipline to practice atinside the boxes, it happens that some workouts include exercises to be performed outdoors. This is the case of running, for example, or particularly intense WODs which are pleasant play outdoors when it starts to get hot. But during the season of allergies nature is our enemy: it is better then to opt for allenamenti indoor inside the four walls of our CrossFit box. Our lungs will thank you.

Training outdoors during allergy season can knock us out.

Keep the allergens away

I pollen is deposited on clothes that we wear when we are outdoors. The advice is therefore to wash them frequently and choose only clean clothes before facing a CrossFit session. Try to use a filter mask to avoid breathing allergens it can be an idea and - why not? - also protective goggles to circumvent the risk of allergic conjunctivitis.

And if that were not enough, you can always reduce the intensity of workouts. A particularly intense CrossFit lesson increases the frequency of breaths and therefore also the possibility of coming into contact with allergens via the airways. Too hard to give it up? Desperate times call for desperate measures.
