Brown sugar: uses and health benefits

Lo cup sugar cane is a sweetener based on sugar cane (saccharum officinarum). It is similar to white sugar but contains varying amounts of molasses.

Brown sugar it can be refined or unrefined, but most of those found in confectionery and grocery stores are refined; there are also other types (less common) of brown sugar.

Like all sugars, cane sugar also provides calories and carbohydrates, but not vitamins and minerals.

NUTRITIONAL VALUES

A teaspoon (about 4,5 gr) of brown sugar provides:

Calorie: 17,5

Grassi: 0

Sodium: 1,3 mg

Carbohydrates: 4,5 mg

Fiber: 0

Sugars: 4,5 gr

Protein: 0

All the calories from brown sugar they come from carbohydrates; the glycemic load of cane sugar is estimated at 3, a very low figure, however, this refers to a serving of a teaspoon, so that's fine do not abuse it.

BENEFITS AND HEALTH CONCERNS

Brown sugar is a simple carbohydrate, which provides quick energy to the body and brain. Excessive sugar consumption is associated with an increase in heart disease, diabetes type 2, metabolic syndrome and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

However, experts say that, when consumed in moderate doses, there are no risks for these pathologies.

CANE SUGAR OR WHITE SUGAR?

Some people believe it brown sugar is a healthier alternative to white sugar, as it contains the molasses.

Molasses provides vitamins and minerals, including potassium, football, iron and magnesium, but cane sugar contains only a small amount of molasses and the micronutrients it provides are insignificant.

ADVERSE REACTIONS

There are gods disadvantages in the consumption of sugar; those who consume too much sugar may have dental problems.

THEWorld Health Organization suggests limiting the consumption of added sugars to less than 10% of daily calorie intake.

The added sugars promote unhealthy bacteria and acids, which damage the teeth, promoting the formation of cavities and the erosion of the enamel.

VARIETY OF CANE SUGAR

Brown sugar is available in dark or light brown variety: the light one has a caramel color and a light caramel aftertaste; this variety consists of white sugar to which molasses has been added.

Dark brown cane sugar is also white sugar, but with a higher percentage of molasses; there is a third variety of cane sugar, mascobado sugar, also called Barbadian sugar, an unrefined sugar that naturally includes molasses.

Finally, there is the granulated cane sugar, which has a consistency similar to that of white granulated sugar.

PRODUCTION AND STORAGE

Sugar cane, the raw material used to make cane sugar, comes harvested from June to December, but brown sugar can be found in stores all year round.

This sugar keeps for a long time time, but it is good to use it within two years of opening; once exposed to air it can become clumpy and sticky.

The ideal is to keep it in a rustproof tin box or in a resealable, moisture-resistant plastic bag.
