Chaos in the first event of the NOBULL CrossFit® Games 2022: here's what happened

The 2022 NOBULL CrossFit® Games got off to a tumultuous start, as several athletes, both men and women, skipped laps during the WOD "Bike to Work ".

The event featured 75 toes-to-bar at the beginning, followed by a 5-mile (about 8km) route to be done by road bike, then another 75 toes-to-bar and to finish another 5 miles by bike.

WOD 1 NOBULL CrossFit® Games 2022 – Bike to work

Unlike most Games events, in this workout all the athletes of the division (40 in total) competed side by side, in the same heat.

On the bike course, athletes had to do 5 one-mile laps to complete the 5-mile bike ride. However, that's not what happened to some athletes ...

Event 1 - Women

The division that started the CrossFit® Games was the women's division. Eventually, Haley Adams won by seconds in a head-to-head race against Tia-Clair Toomey.

However, there were two athletes who finished the test earlier than expected:

In theory, Brandon crossed the line in 8th place, but according to CrossFit® HQ he did not complete the required number of laps. The same happened to Elena Carratal Sanahuja.

Both were penalized.

Officially, Brandon finished in 27th place, while Sanahuja finished last in the division.

Even more curious is the case of the South Korean athlete Seungyeon Choi. According to CrossFit®, has "completed one more lap in this event" and the exact time he completed the lap was checked in the recorded footage!

Our Elisa Fuliano, in this event finished the race 35th, with a time of 44'54 ''.

Event 1 - Men

In the men's division a similar situation occurred, but probably more aggravated, as people who did not complete the required number of laps ranked 1st and 2nd.

According to the Livestream, Lazar Dukic intended to continue until lap 5, but turned around and followed in the footsteps of Panchik who crossed the finish line.

As if that weren't enough, CrossFit® announced that Spencer's twin brother Saxon was penalized.

The ranking, however, was accurate from the start. Spencer, instead of finishing first, finished fifth.

Eventually, Ricky Garard won with a few seconds ahead of Jonne Koski.

As for ours Enrico Zeno, he finished 22nd with an incredible time of 38'59 '' even beating Gui Malheiros!

You can check the ranking here.

How did CrossFit® solve the problem?

CrossFit® employed more than two hours to solve the problem related to the discrepancy in the number of laps that some athletes have not completed.

According to a statement, the slowest lap time of each athlete was added to the recorded time for missing laps in the final score recalculation.
