Hafthor Bjornsson sets the deadlift world record

Hafthor Björnsson, the actor who plays "the mountain" in Game of Thrones, has set a new record as a weightlifter. He lifted 501 kg deadlift, surpassing the previous record, belonging to Eddie Hall, by one kilo.

Here is the video of the incredible lift:

On his Instagram profile posted the video with a thank you note:

“I have no words,” said Björnsson. “What a wonderful day, I will remember it for the rest of my life. I said I could do it and when I put something on my head I don't give up until I get it. I want to give a big hug to my family, friends, coaches, fans, sponsors and enemies who have made this record a reality. Thank you all for the support!"

This isn't his only record

This it is not the first record that Björnsson has broken in his weightlifting career. In 2018, he conquered the first place in the Arnold Strongman Classic, lifting 472 kg!

Instead, in 2015, the actor managed to take five steps with a 650 kg ship mast on the back. Before him, the alleged record belonged to the Norse warrior Orm Storlfson, who in the year 1000 managed to take three steps before his spine split in half.

In Game of Throne, Björnsson was the third actor in the cast in the role of "The Mountain," which appeared in the fourth season of the series.

Before him, the character was played by Conan Stevens (first season) and Ian Whyte (second season).

The 4 most impressive deadlifts of all time

Eddie Hall: 500kg, 2016

Englishman Eddie Hall was until recently the deadlift world record holder and was the first man to break the 500kg barrier in the exercise.

As soon as he finished lifting, the athlete suffered from nosebleeds and passed out on stage.

"I almost died," he told the Yorkshire Evening Post. “The pressure on my body was surreal, which made me sick. It is not healthy to do such a thing ... but I did. I'm sure this brand will remain in the record books for a long time ”said the athlete.

Benedikt Magnusson: 460kg, 2011

Icelandic Magnusson is still the world record holder in the "raw deadlift", which in translation would be something like "raw deadlift", in other words, without the aid of accessories to keep the hands on the bar.

In the "raw deadlift" it is also not allowed to use the competition suit, only the belt.

Andy Bolton: 457,5 kg, 2006

Bolton is English and still holds the world record for "equipped deadlift".

This category also does not allow the use of adhesive tape to secure the hands to the bar, but does allow the competitor to wear the belt and racing suit.

Ed Coan: 410kg, 1991

Considered the greatest powerlifter of all time, Ed Coan has already broken 71 insane world records. One of them was in 1991, when he lifted 410 kg in the “raw deadlift - whose record was broken years later and today belongs to Benedikt Magnusson, as previously mentioned.

The difference of 50 kg between one record and another may seem great, but we must consider the gap of 20 years and a lot of technical and technological innovation.

Well, so what? Will you still want to brag about your deadlift PR? 😛
