Mat Fraser and his HWPO program at the Madrid Championship

Our king, Mat Fraser, is about to embark on a new project: he will head the program of events for the Madrid Championship!

The Spanish competition had to move to Ciudad Real due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the season 2022 will see her return to Madrid's Caja Magica tennis facility with more athletes, more money and scheduling from Fraser and the HWPO team.

"This event is the largest in Europe with the biggest prize up for grabs, ”Fraser said in a social media post.

Fraser retired in 2020 after five consecutive CrossFit® Games titles, but has been active in the community since hanging up his boots.

“We will plan the whole event, from the qualifiers to the face-to-face event in Madrid”.

The details of the competition

Il Madrid championship will consist of two rounds with plans for 2.400 total athletes (500 teams) who will perform in front of around 22.000 fans.

In the first round there will be the online qualifiers, which will take place from 1 to 15 May. The second will be the competition in person which will take place from 9 to 11 September.

There will be three workouts that will be released during the online qualifiers. The organizers will announce the 22.1 on 1 May, 22.2 on 5 May and 22.3 on 10 May.

Fraser and HWPO will schedule both these workouts and those during the competition in person.

The Madrid Championship will have a prize pool of 170.000 euros, divided between the various team and individual divisions.

Individual athletes will have the highest prizes, with the first place will get € 30.000, the second € 15.000 and the third € 6.000.

Madrid Championship at Caja Magica

Caja Magica has been the venue for multiple sporting competitions; the list includes the CrossFit® Invitational in 2015 and the Meridian Regionals in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

It will now host the return of the Madrid Championship, which further demonstrates how the sport is flourishing in Europe.

The programming of the Madrid Championship

Despite all his victories, Mat Fraser also experiences adventures for the first time. Shortly after the launch of its HWPO program, the opportunity to direct the Spanish competition's program of events arrived.

Fraser isn't the only athlete with experience in this field: Rich Froning Jr, who has nine CrossFit® Games titles combined as an individual and team athlete, has scheduled team events at the 2019 Dubai CrossFit® Championship.

The words of the Madrid Championship event manager

Alfonso Chamorro, Madrid Championship event managerSaid:

“Built by the Spanish community, we intend to make the Madrid Championship in 2022 the largest functional fitness 'reunion' in Europe.

We plan to host over 2.400 athletes, 1.000 volunteers, over 100 brands and to award the largest prize pool in the history of European events. All this in an attempt to offer an incredible experience to the community: volunteers, spectators, gyms and partner brands ”.
