Not just strength: the differences between powerlifting, weightlifing and strongman

Ah, the force.

One of the best things you can own.

With it, all doors are open to you. You can look cool in front of your girlfriend by moving the sofa with one hand. You can help mom who can't open that jar of preserves. You can be the envy of other guys / boyfriends / husbands when you take a single tour with shopping bags in the supermarket parking lot.

Strength training: why

There aren't many answers to give. Strength must be trained because it is the single physical characteristic that has positive effects on all the others.

Don't have time and have to choose only one thing to train? Choose the strength.

How strength is trained

Or better, in which disciplines do you train?

The sports disciplines they have chosen strength as a goal and touchstone they are (mainly) three:

Ok, ok: there is also arm wrestling, to say. but let's not go into too niche areas.

Let's see what distinguishes these three expressions of force.

powerlifting

If they paid me by the word and gave me carte blanche, I could become a millionaire talking about powerlifting.

Simplicity and obsession. Brutality and big food. Southern metal, ammonia salts, worn camouflage pants. I can't imagine anything more beautiful.

Powerlifting focuses on three lifts:

The powerlifting competition consists of three attempts for each lift, in which the weight is increased each time.

The workouts are, if we can say so, "simple". You work to the nausea on the three elevations, on their variants, on partial movements, very often with short series and very close to the ceiling. There is no shortage of accessory exercises, of course.

I said “simple workouts” but that's not really the case. The success of a career as a powerlifter it depends on the goodness of the cycling, i.e. how you modify the training sessions over time, alternating peak phases with maintenance and discharge phases.

Pros of the discipline: perfect if you are looking for a restricted "clique" to train with. A small home gym is enough to train.

Cons of discipline: can be boring. It can lead, if there is no respect for the technique, to a series of more or less annoying ailments. Finally (even if things are changing) the traditional physique of the powerlifter it is associated with that of large mammals.

Strongman

Always brutality, always long beards, perhaps a lot more beer. This sums up the strongman.

The strongman (I had talked about it at the dawn of CrossMag) inherit and update the tests of strength with which, from the dawn of humanity, man has challenged his fellow men to rise to the "best".

Watch 10 hours of strongman movies on Youtube - you'll see a mix of raised stone balls, beer kegs thrown, cars or truck engines dragged, very high poles transported, and in general a whole series of objects with prohibitive shapes and weights that are moved here and there.

Pros of the discipline: it's pure fun. In the competitions there is a lot of support, and an amazing climate. Beer.

Cons of discipline: difficult, in Italy, to find organized structures in which to train. You have to look good in a kilt (sooner or later it touches you).

Weightlifting

Compared to powerlifters and strongman, the weightlifter is a refined noble of the French Enlightenment.

Olympic weightlifting it is based on two main lifts:

You work with technique to obsession, the rack position becomes second nature.

Pros of the discipline: you know the attack of the quadriceps at the knee of a weightlifter? Furthermore, CrossFit® has drawn heavily from these disciplines. Finally: you can participate in the olympics.

Cons of discipline: the focus on technique is total, so it can be frustrating in the early days (the "big loads" are slow in coming).
