Madrid Championship 2022 recap: between controversy, smiles and sweat

If you have followed us on social media, you already know that we at CrossMAG were there, in the stands of the Caja Magica in Madrid to admire this competition show.

There were many elite athletes who fought on the Spanish floor for a prize money of € 30 thousand for the first in the standings.

And what to say? The show was secured and they were elected winners Emma Tall and Lazar Djukic, after 3 intense days of physical tests.

For the Teams category, CrossFit® Oslo HSTL Made got rid of opponents, beating the Krypton team by just 54 points.

But let's find out a little more about this race ...

Madrid Championship 2022: more details

The Madrid Championship is a CrossFit® sanctioned event, which ran from 9-11 September this year. It was the first time that Mat Fraser and its HWPO Training Camp they have planned a race of this magnitude.

They were responsible for the program from qualifying to finals. As mentioned at the beginning, the winner of each individual elite category was awarded a prize of 30.000 euros.

A total of 8 events were scheduled over the weekend in which athletes from different countries (mainly Europeans) faced off in a head-to-head competition.

Madrid Championship 2022: leaderboard women

In the elite women's division, the question we all asked ourselves was which Emma would win!

The Swedish athlete Emma Tall started the final day with less than 30 points clear of Irish Emma McQuaid.

When McQuaid closed the gap, after winning the penultimate event, it all boiled down to the last workout.

In fact, the final was really exciting! However, Emma Tall showed consistency, taking second place, thus beating Emma McQuaid by just 27 points.

Third place, Belgian Manon Angonese, nearly earned second place after winning the last race, but remained -4 points behind McQuaid.

  1. Emma Tall- 711 points
  2. Emma McQuaid - 684 points
  3. Manon Angonese - 680 points

Madrid Championship 2022: leaderboard man

In the elite men's division, the race for first place on the podium was less dramatic. Lazar Djukic had already won two events and was almost certain to secure the gold medal. A 19th place finish at the “True Form Fitness” event didn't rock the rankings.

The biggest fight was that between the 2nd and 6th place. The Spanish athlete Aniol Ekai reversed the situation by winning the last event, which guaranteed him the 2nd place overall.

David Shorunke, From United Kingdom, finished the event in 8th place and had to fight for 3rd place in the final standings, just 3 points behind Ekai.

But here a parenthesis opens: Shorunke, at the end of the race released a post which shows all his indignation for the final event.

In a video you can see the repetitions of Ekai's thrusters (apparently all "no rep") but the judge didn't call them.

Il “CrossFit® batman” Andrew Hiller he was not indifferent and he has too trodden the hand saying that CrossFit® should be stricter with judges who work at competitions, as Shorunke lost 2nd place in the standings due to a standard miscalculation.

In the end, the men's ranking remained like this:

1 * Lazar Djukic - 647 points

Aniol Ekai - 609 points

3rd David Shorunke - 606 points
