10 tips to excel in the 2024 Open

2024 is here and do you know what it means?  A new season of the CrossFit® Games is coming! As registration for the 2024 Open opens, athletes from around the world are already preparing for one of the most iconic events of the year.

Whether you are a competitor or a regular visitor to the box, preparing effectively is the key to success. Let's discover together some essential tips to help you have the best performance for this new year.

10 tips for performing well in the 2024 Open

1.     Analyze your 2023 performance

Start reviewing your results CrossFit® Open 2023. What were your points of force and weakness? Understanding your past performance is critical to setting realistic goals and effectively focusing your training for the 2024 Open.

If you have already done this analysis, come back to it to identify the key points that emerged.

2.     Reflect on your training progress

Take a moment to reflect on how you have trained since the last Open ended. Recognize areas where you have improved and identify areas that still need work.

This reflection will guide your training strategy from here on out and allow you to set reasonable expectations. There's still time to exercise your weaknesses before the Open, but avoid overwhelming yourself.

3.     Focus on daily improvement

Some of the most destabilizing moments in our process are before a competition. Remember, the journey to the 2024 Open is a marathon, not a sprint.

Concentrate on daily incremental improvements. Set goals in every session, whether it's performing uninterrupted sets of a movement at a metcon or having dedicated lifting technique sessions!

Improvement can still happen, but you need to set goals!

4.     Recovery is just as important as training

Il recovery it's why you become better. A good workout means you have triggered a stress, your body then recovers and you create adaptation.

La rest/recovery is key. Anxiety about an upcoming competition can easily push us to do more (like intensive studying for an exam that makes you very nervous).

If you don't prioritize recovery during this time, you may end up disappointed after the competition and not even realize it's because you didn't rest!

5.     Define what success means to you

Success in CrossFit® is personal. Set your personal goals for the Open 2024. If you have analyzed your previous performance well and reflected on what you have worked on and improved, you are well equipped to set goals that are achievable and not overly ambitious.

You need two types of lenses: final goal and specific objectives. The ultimate goal may be to reach the top 25% to access the QFs or to try to enter the top 40 in your region.

Specific goals are related to each individual workout, for example: complete a round every 2 minutes, etc.

6.     Plan your training program

Create a strategy for your training program. Decide when you will tackle each workout of the Open. This is a very small but extremely beneficial tip.

When you have something planned, you will be able to organize everything to be at your best.

7.     Choose your helper (or judge) carefully

Having someone to help you through the Open process is essential! You need someone you are comfortable with and trust to maintain standards while being a comforting presence.

Don't forget that if you are looking to compete in the quarterfinals and beyond, you will need a team to help you prepare your equipment, camera and timer.

8.     Practice makes perfect

If you're unsure about a workout, Don't hesitate to prepare in advance. Familiarity with the movements and strategy can greatly increase your confidence and performance.

It can also save you time and reduce soreness that can hinder your performance if you decide to do it again.

9.     Schedule time for re-dos

Sometimes, it is necessary to re-do the tests. Schedule time in your schedule for a second attempt, if necessary. This allows you to learn from your first and approach the re-do with a better strategy.

Additionally, you should ask yourself: Is my result a flaw in strategy or fitness? The first can be redone, the second will be part of your improvement plan for next year.

10.  Know the rules

CrossFit is a sport and as such There are rules to follow to play correctly. Read the rules and all the details of the workouts, movement standards, setup requirements and submission deadlines.

If you don't, you risk working for an entire year toward a goal only to see it vanish due to a technicality. Don't do it to yourself.
