Two other Games athletes receive doping penalties

Late in the evening of Friday December 10th, CrossFit® Inc announced that others two athletes would have officially received a four-year suspension from the Games, following positive drug tests for banned substances.

The announcement thus raises a 10 the total number of athletes sanctioned during the calendar year 2021; some sanctions caused more discussion than others (such as Lari Cunha, who managed to prove the contamination of her supplements).

Now let's find out who are the two athletes sanctioned for doping in these days:

Bernard Luzi

Winner of the men's 50-54 division at the 2021 Games. There has been a lot of talk about his doping on social media, he himself published a post announcing that he was found positive for meldonium, a banned substance classified as a hormone and metabolic modulator.
Luzi was tested at the Games on July 29, the last day of competition, the effective start date of his suspension.

Svetlana Kubyshkina

Winner of the Asia Invitational, she tested positive for methenolone and its metabolite, furosemide and trimetazidine.
Methenolone is an anabolic steroid classified as an anabolic agent. Furosemide is listed in the class of diuretics and masking agents and trimetazidine is classified as a hormone and metabolic modulator.
Kubyshkina was unable to compete in the 2021 Games due to travel restrictions, due to visa issues. It was tested outside the Games, on August 28, the official start date of its suspension.

The Russian native has already competed in the Open for three seasons before 2021, but only in the quarter-finals this season did she manage to win the invitation to the Games, thanks to her victory at the Asia Invitational.

Previously, he competed at the national level in Russia in weightlifting and in the Russian national team in the 2019 World Championships for the International Functional Fitness Federation.

Bernard Luzi is an Italian CrossFit® athlete who started practicing this sport in 2012. He has participated in the Games four times, his best result before this year was a 4th place in 2019, in the Men division (45 -49).

"I was wrong. No story to tell. No mercy posts to justify my negligence, ”Luzi wrote on Instagram. “I have a responsibility to know what's in every pre-workout, supplement, medicine I give my body. I have failed as much as those who prescribed them have failed me.

There hasn't been a public announcement yet, but his failed appeal and Luzi's suspension mean he'll lose his 2021 Games win, making runner-up Kevin Koester third-time division champion.

At the end of last month Koester posted the doping news and the CrossFit® email on his social media.
