THEadrenaline, also called epinephrine, is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands that helps prepare for stressful or dangerous situations; adrenaline rush is the name for the rapid release of this hormone into the blood.
In this way the organism is ready to react in case of “fight or flight".

What is it and what does it do?
Adrenaline, or epinephrine, is a hormone that the adrenal glands send into the bloodstream; when it is frightened or stressed, adrenaline is immediately released into the body.
The adrenal glands are located at the top of each kidney and are responsible for the production of many hormones including aldosterone, cortisol, adrenaline and norepinephrine.
The adrenal glands are controlled by another gland, called pituitary gland. Adrenaline is also known as the fight or flight hormone; it is released in response to a stressful, frightening, dangerous, or exciting situation.
This hormone helps the body react faster; it increases the heart rate, blood flow to the brain and muscles and stimulates the body to produce cup sugar to be used as fuel.
What are the symptoms of an adrenaline rush?
La adrenaline rush starts in the brain; when a dangerous or stressful situation is perceived, the information is sent to a part of the brain called the amygdala, which plays a role in processing emotions.
Se the amygdala senses danger, sends a signal to another region, the hypothalamus, the command center of the brain, which transmits a signal through the autonomic nerves to the adrenal medulla; when the adrenal glands receive this signal, they respond by releasing adrenaline into the blood.
When adrenaline is released into the bloodstream:
- The heart beats faster
- Increase your breath
- Digestion slows down so that other muscles can use the blood
- We feel very alert.
La Adrenaline rush can be brought on by panic attacks, car accidents, frightening experiences, and dangerous, adventure-type activities. among which:
- Snowboard
- Rock climbing
- Parachuting
- Bungee jumping
- Zip lining.
Are there any diseases associated with adrenaline?
If the adrenal glands produce too much of this hormone, it can cause high blood pressure due to pheochromocytoma; it is a tumor that can be removed with surgery.
Having high blood pressure does not mean you have a pheochromocytoma; it is a rare event, which must be diagnosed by the doctor after several tests.
The symptoms of pheochromocytoma are:
- High blood pressure
- Bad headache
- Profuse sweating
- Dizziness
Can adrenaline be controlled?
Adrenaline has it function of helping the body to react in a dangerous situation, but there are times when it is not useful for the body; nicotine causes the body to release adrenaline, which makes the heart beat faster and blood pressure rise.
When anxiety causes panic attacks, the body releases adrenaline because it thinks it's in danger; in these cases, it is good to know how to react.
You can try to perform simple actions to try to calm down:
- To breath deeply
- Take a walk in nature
- Listen to relaxing music
- Talk to a friend.
If these techniques were not enough, contact your doctor or a psychologist, who will be able to advise you on the right path.
