What is diosmin?
La diosmin is a flavonoid commonly found in citrus fruits; the flavonoids they are plant compounds that have antioxidant properties, protect the body from inflammation and unstable molecules, called free radicals.
Diosmin was first isolated from prickly pear plant in 1925 and has been used since 1969 as a natural therapy for various conditions such as hemorrhoids, varicose veins, venous insufficiency, ulcers and circulatory problems.
This flavonoid is believed to help reduce inflammation earrestore normal blood flow in people with venous insufficiency.
Today diosmin is largely derived from another flavonoid, hesperidin, found in citrus fruits, particularly in orange peel.
Benefits and use
Diosmin is still used today for blood vessel disorders such as hemorrhoids and chronic venous insufficiency.
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins located near the anus, while venous insufficiency is a condition where the veins in the legs are swollen and blocked.
Research suggests that this compound reduces inflammation in the veins and improves blood flow.
- Hemorrhoids: diosmin helps to improve internal and external hemorrhoids; it reduces itching, bleeding, secretions and other symptoms and also reduces the healing time after surgical removal of the hemorrhoids.
- Chronic venous disease: this term includes various pathologies such as varicose veins, leg ulcers, phlebitis etc .; diosmin reduces the tingling sensation, heaviness and swelling in the lower limbs and improves the general quality of life and gives pain relief.
- Backache: In a study of 300 people with back pain, slight improvements were reported in subjects who took 900 mg of diosmin 3 times a day; however, a control group taking mannitol and dexamethasone had the same beneficial effects, so further studies are needed.
Side Effects and Precautions
Diosmin is generally recognized as a safe over-the-counter supplement; before hiring always contact your doctor.
Although rare, side effects include:
- stomach ache
- Diarrhea
- headache
- dizziness
- rashes
- muscle pain
- irregular heartbeat
dosage
The most common supplement is the Daflon 500 (450 mg diosmin - 50 mg hesperidin); however, there are many diosmin products available online and in pharmacies.
The maximum recommended dosage is 1000 mg per day500 mg in the morning after a meal and 500 mg in the evening always after meals; these dosage guidelines have been shown to be safe and effective for various conditions.
Interactions
Diosmin can interact with the following drugs:
- anticoagulants
- anticonvulsants
- antihistamines
- muscle relaxants
- non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
- paracetamol
Diosmin can inhibit various liver enzymes responsible for metabolism of the above drugs and may also interact with some herbal supplements, including fenugreek, garlic, ginger, ginkgo, turmeric and ginseng due to their involvement in blood thinning.
