In a post on his Instagram, the athlete Alec Smith, brother of Ben smith, runner-up of the Reebok CrossFit® Games this year with the team CrossFit Krypton, said he was gay.
In a visibly excited video, he had to stop a few times before finishing his beautiful message:
"I know this is not a fitness post, but I wanted to tell you something I had been thinking about for some time. I think I'm finally ready. So, I'm gay, and I've come to a point in my life where I'm fine. "
Alec spoke of the difficulty accepting his homosexuality, who noted at the age of 12 years. He also said he did not never experienced this discovery well, until this year when it has reached serenity.
"Ever since I was a child, I told myself that I would never tell anyone. I'm older now, and I'm still finding out. I still don't really know who I am and that's okay. It's okay not to know who you are. "
From his move to New York he met so many people who welcomed him and understood him, encouraging him to to live life without too many thoughts, first of all, accepting oneself!
The post currently has over 9 thousand comments, and most are extremely positive. Among these are the messages from important names of the CrossFit®such as: Noah Ohlsen, Brent Fikowski, Lauren Fisher, Katrin Davidsdottir, Tia Clair Toomey and many others who competed at the Reebok CrossFit® Games. And this also includes sponsors, like ROMWOD.
But what is most striking are the thousands of comments onimportance that this gesture has had for all those who practice this sport, they do not have the same courage and live in fear. As Alec himself says in the video, everyone has his own time of maturity and acceptance and will know the right time to come out:
"Don't feel obligated to tell anyone everything you don't owe, they told me. This is your life, you shouldn't like anyone else. When the time is right, for some people it takes a month and for other 26 years. Focus on yourself. "
It is worth mentioning that he is not the only declared homosexual athlete to participate in the Games. Among the women, we have champion Samantha Briggs and his wife Nicole Holcomb, Cassidy Lance Mcwerther and others as well. Even among men, Portuguese athlete Nuno Costa, who won the champion title with the Invictus teams, claimed to be gay.
For our part, we just have to say that we are happy that Alec accepts, we hope for his happiness and we are proud of the attitude and what it will represent for thousands of people who are still ashamed to live their sexuality freely!
