La European semifinal took place two weeks ago in Berlin and, as many have noted, , Icelandic Sara Sigmundsdottir did not qualify for the CrossFit ® Games. What happened to her?
Sara is best known for having herself placed 3rd at the 2016 and 2017 CrossFit ® Games. However, at the end of 2017, the athlete suffered a accident (broken rib).
She returned in 2018 and qualified for the Games, but had to drop out of the competition due to pain from her injury. In 2019 she placed 20th in the competition, then she won the Dubai CrossFit ®Championship the same year, in December.
The following year, Sara returned to the 2020 Games but finished in 21st place. In 2021 she injured her knee and did not take part in the season. In 2022 she ranks 12th in the Last Chance Qualifier and she failed to snag a ticket to Madison.
And here we are at 2023! Sara Sigmundsdottir Tentice to return to the Games after a 3-year absence. At the end of the second day of the European semifinal in Berlin, he was in 12th place.
Ma on the last day, in the WOD which consisted of a legless rope climb (athletes had to go up and down without using their feet), Sara could not keep the descent and fell almost every time.
In the end, she ended up in 56th place, which dropped her in the standings. She finished 18th overall and she didn't qualify again.

He also wrote:
“In my sport there is only one chance to qualify for the finals. If you can make it all the way to the semi-finals, then either you can make it or your season is over and you have to wait a whole year before you get a chance to try again. The margins are so thin that if anything happens, the entire season is at risk.
I took a few days to reflect on the semi-finals and, knowing that my performance was far from my capabilities, I realized that I should actually give myself a pat on the back. In difficult circumstances I fought with all my heart and never gave up.
I could write a whole book full of apologies, but I won't. I know what went wrong and I'm already on my way to fixing it. I would like to say a special thank you to all of you.
For your kindness to me in Berlin and for all the beautiful messages, love and support I have received since then. You are what make this roller coaster of emotions worth fighting. You are what inspires me and keeps me going.
I also want to thank my amazing team and family. I appreciate you very much and will never take you for granted. Finally, I want to thank my sponsors. I wouldn't be able to do all of this if I didn't have you behind me. Over and out and on to the next mission 🫱🏽🫲🏻”
The words of his coach Justin Cotler
One thing is certain: Sara has no plans to retire (information confirmed on Instagram by her coach Justin Cotler):
“Last weekend I had the honor and pleasure of coaching a true legend. Sara and I have been friends for some time, but we have just started our coach/athlete journey together. And while we didn't reach our goal at the semi-finals, I believe the bond and trust that is forming will lead to some magic before long.
What amazes me about Sara is her authenticity. What you see on camera is exactly what you see off camera. She is as kind and generous to fans as she is to people close to her. People from all over the world line up to meet her, to take a picture with her and she makes each of them feel like the most special person in the world.
Few have meant more or given more to the sport than CrossFit. He's a true icon and if he stopped racing today, we'd say she's had a legendary career. But I know she still has a burning desire and a belief that she is one of the best in the world. And I also fully believe in her.
So please delete it. Her return will be even sweeter. After all, we all love a good bad luck story.”
