La Life of a Russian athlete in America is not easy at all. After several hullabaloos, Roman Khrennikov obtained his visa earlier this year and chose to live in Madison, Wisconsin to train for the 2022 CrossFit® Games.
In July, just before the Games, Khrennikov returned to Russia to reunite with his wife Anastasiya and their newborn son. However, a few weeks ago the Khrennikov family communicated that Tennessee would be their new home. They decided to move to Cookeville, Tennessee where Rich Froning lives.
But why Tennessee? Anastasiya said that it was for “the lowest taxes… that's all”.

Why do athletes decide to move to Tennessee?
Il Tennessee is one of nine states that do not have a state income tax. Among others we find: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.
Khrennikov's transfer for tax reasons is not uncommon, in fact quite common. In 2017 Mat Fraser relocated to Cookeville, Tennessee. When asked why right there, the champion replied: “Taxes, bro”.
Naturally Tia-Clair Toomey also lives there. She and her husband, Shane, used to live in Cookeville but now live in Nashville.
With Roman Khrennikov's move to Cookeville, the 2022 CrossFit® Games runner-up will remain in the North America East Region for the 2023 season…provided he receives an exemption to remain in the United States for the season.
